  • The Milky Way is just east of Mt Rainier at 11:30PM. The lights on Mt Rainier are a base camp and the climbers beginning to start their final ascent. They have a 4,000 foot climb from base camp and try to reach the summit by day break so they can start down before the warm temperatures open crevasses. A meteor glows through the east side of the Milky Way.

  • By 2AM the Milky Way is right over the summit of Mt Rainier and looks as though it is coming out of the volcano. Three parties climb the north side of the volcano and at least three more are climbing the ridge along the east side.

  • A lenticular cloud blankets the summit of Mt Rainier. The Kautz chut drops from the ice field on the summit and the Kautz Glacier grows from the bowl just beflow the summit. The Pyramid and Success glaciers are on the left. The Success Cleaver is the large larva wall extending down the left side of the mountain.

  • Mt Rainier just up the trail toward Sourdough Ridge from Sunrise. First Burroughs Mountain is on the right. Burroughs Mountain and Sourdough Ridge are remenants of andesite lava flows between 420,000 and 500,000 years ago when Mt Rainier was just begining to grow.

  • Mt Baker rises above the Cascades north of Mt Rainier. The photograph was taken from Sourdough Ridge in Mt Raineir national Park.

  • Mt Rainier from 1st Burroughs Mountain. The trail on the right climbs to 2nd Burroughs Mountain. Emmons Glacier flows down on the left and Winthrop Glacier on the right. Winthrop Glacier is in front of Willis Wall. Inter Glacier is the small glacier in the middle. Little Tahoma is the peak to the left of Mt Rainier.

  • Mt Rainier from 2nd Burroughs Mountain before the lenticular cloud formed. Emmons glacier flows down to the left and Wintrop Glacier flows down to the righ in front of Willis Wall. The small glacier in the middle is Inter Glacier and mountain climbers go up it to Steamboat Prow before they drop down to Camp Sherman for the night before their climb.

  • Inter Glacier. Mountaineers hike up through Inter Glacier to go over the top of Steamboat Prow and drop down to Camp Sherman for the night before the acsent to the summit. The ranger cabin sits on the backside of Steamboat Prow and most mountaineers seem to camp on the glacier snow behind the hill. Emmons and Winthrop glaciers split at Steamboat Prow with Emmons on the left and Winthrop on the right.

  • A lenticular cloud forms over the top of Mt Rainier. A landslide came down part of Willis Wall while I was watching. I heard the crack and saw dust rise as the debrey crashed down to the glacier below.

  • Looking east from Burroughs Mountain #3 and down the White River Valley. Broken slabs of andesite dot the hill below my position. The trail up to Burroughs #2 is visible on the slope to the left.

  • Looking south along Burroughs Mountain #3. The big valley beyond the tundra is White River Valley that Emmons Glacier goes into. I did not walk out where that guy is standing. It looked too narrow for me. The rocks ar Andesite Lava. Burrows Mountain is over a 1,000 foot thick flow of andesite lava from an eruption a long time ago.
