Surf Scoters and Barrow's Goldeneyes winter beside the Mukiteo Ferry, looking for mussels around the ferry landing.

  • The flock moved out from the piers when the ferry pulled into the dock.  Many of the birds are pushing a small wall of water in front of them.  Nice mixed group of adults and first winter birds.

  • A group of Surf Scoters drift in past the end of the pier heading toward a feeding area.

  • Something startled the group, causing them to run across the water, rapidly flapping their wings to take off.

  • The ducks were startled by something and had their heads held high alert for possible danger.

  • A small raft of Goldeneyes pass along the shore.  The adult female has the yellow-orage bill.  The adult males have the white cresent moon at the base of their bill.  Several first winter birds are also present.

  • A mixed group of scoters and goldeneyes rest between feeding dives.  Note the young glaucous-winged gull with them.  If a duck surfaced with a mussel, the gull would attempt to steal it from them.  The duck would immediately dive to protect its morsel.

  • Four horned grebes rest between dives for food.  The morning sun created a brilliant reflection of the pier.

  • Three Surf Scotters move in close to shore before beginning to feed.  The femail leads the group with two males along side.  The bill and head pattern on the males is quite distinctive for this species.

  • A group of Barrows Goldeneyes swim by that includes adult males and females and first winter birds.  They are highly alert to possible danger as they swim along.
