NW Autumn Landscapes

17 images Created 16 Jan 2013

Autumn is a special and perfect time to be outside in the Pacific Northwest. The air is crisp and temperatures are lower. Fall comes first to the subalpine habitats of Washington and then gradually works down the slopes to the edge of Puget Sound. At high altitudes the heather and huckleberry meadows are interspersed with mountain hemlocks forming a fascinating patchwork of color. Many flowers are rushing to produce their seeds before winter comes. Fog is common at this time of year and creates a peaceful feeling to the environment. The color, the design and the fog create interesting opportunities to capture the serene and tranquil sense of the landscapes in photographic art.

  • We waited to see if the setting sun would give some interesting color to Mt Shuksan when we noticed that fog was beginning to rise out of the valley. Gradually the trees were engulfed by the fog and it flowed across Picture Lake covering the mountain before the sunset.

  • The pastel red of huckleberries in the subalpine habitat is the first indication that fall is approaching. This combined with the cool air creates sense of change and energizes ones feelings. I was intrigued by the dark green leaves within the bed of red huckleberry leaves. I tried to capture this mosaic in an interesting design.

  • Artist Point is high in Mt Baker National Recreational Area. As I drove up to the parking lot this morning, I worried that the fog would be so thick that we couldn't see a thing. Shortly after walking up onto the point, the fog began to flow like a river down into the valley. It was still 30 minutes before the sun would rise and the light was soft and delicate.

  • To be out in the mountains early in the morning and experience the sensation of seeing the sun rise over Mt Shuksan has to be a treasure I will remember forever. We had come up the previous morning but the fog was so thick we could not even see any indication that the sun ever rose. It was great on this morning when the fog drifted down into the valley a little while before the sun was scheduled to rise. Truly a spectacular start to the day.

  • The ravine containing Bagley Creek forms an enticing goal to pursue down the trail. The cool fall day, glimpse of a Bagley Lake and snow fields provides energy to walk down the trail

  • The cool fall day, glimpses of Bagly Creek and snow fields provide energy to walk down the trail. The still pond reflected the snow field and columnar basalt wall.

  • Sitting and listening to the mountain stream roll by is extremely relaxing when all of a sudden I notice a flicker that is not the ripple of rapids. After a few minutes wait an American Dipper pops out from behind a rock and pauses before it dives back into the rapids to look for an insect. As the bird moves down the stream, I am left to feel I have been so lucky to experience this moment.

  • The greens of the meadow grasses reflected in the shallow creek, creating a tranquil setting. I was looking for someway to capture this scene when an American Pipit began to work along the bank. I waited until it went out on the log to capture its reflection in addition to the meadow plants.

  • The view down Bagley Creek is inviting for a long walk, enjoying the cool and calm feeling of early fall. Fall flowers intersperse with red leaves of huckleberries as one wonders down to lower Bagley Lake. This is a place to escape the rapidness of urban life.

  • A beautiful summer evening ends perfectly with a spectacular sunset across Elliot Bay and a walk along the beach. The feeling of contentment oozes from the evening and one is left feeling how great life is.

  • Not a ripple was on Cranberry Lake as the sun began to rise. The fisherman waited patiently for a fish to bite in the warm morning light and adjacent to the fall colors. As I watched I could feel the tension in my body drift away with the morning fog and felt I could sit for hours enjoying the scene.

  • Fall along Icicle Creek outside of Levenworth, WA. The sound of the water rushing over the rocks created a tranquil atmosphere. I crawled out onto a rock in the stream to be able to take in the ambiance of the place and was reward by seeing an American Dipper searching for food in the rapids.

  • Rain and fog had settled into the Cascades as I walked to overlook the White River. Fresh snow had fallen at higher altitudes and the yellow maples dotted the valley. I stood for quite a while to enjoy the serene setting. Little did I know that Mt Rainier towered over this scene through the distant fog.

  • The trail wound lazily through the stand of old growth hemlocks and douglas firs. Scattered in the undergrowth were many vine maples in full fall color.

  • The magnificent trees on either side of this lane, with the patches of green and yellow at eye level created a reflective atmosphere while I strolled slowly through the grove.

  • Clouds enveloped Mt Rainier for two days as it snowed at higher elevations and rained through the valleys. The clouds lifted for a while on the third morning and the sun lit the fresh snow and fall colors in the valley. A lenticular cloud hung tight over the summit.
