  • The intricate design formed by the wood grain and cracks was fascinating to study. I studied the design trying to decide if it looked like something in particular.

  • This large log was sitting solid in the surf and the waves were not strong enough to move it. The next big storm may take this back to sea or push it higher on the beach. What does it look like to you? A large butterfly?

  • The logs were piled like thrown linclon logs. The storm surges must have been impressive to push these logs up on the beach and stack them on top of each other. Can you imagine what it might have looked like?

  • The small stream formed an intricate design on the beach as the tide moved out. I was fascinated by the pattern and how the flow of water created it and changed it.

  • The landscape was constantly changing. The clouds settled down close around me on the river and then would rise slowly for a few minutes. At times, I could not see across the river to the forest on the far side. It was fascinating and extremely serene. I stood for quite a while watching the dynamic scene. Eventually I realized I was getting cold in the drizzle and decide to head back toward the trail.

  • I had jumped the stream to work my way out onto a sand bar to look at the Hoh River. I happened to look back and seeing the yellow buttercups along the stream and the red alders forming a protective fence. The light in the early morning with gentle rain was just spectacular.

  • A few ochr sea stars clung to rocks at low tide as the waves came in and out. I used a slow shutter speed to create a ghostly feeling to the scene.

  • The design on the back of this ochre sea star was intricate and fascinating. The tide had fallen just below it allowing me to look closely at it. A band of quartz in the rock helped to frame the sea star.

  • As the tide fell, the ochr sea stars became exposed and easily seen. Their tube feet held them tight to the rock as the waves crashed across them. I sat down on a rock to take the picture as close as I could to their level. Each wave kept the bottom three wet and put spray on the rest. The afternoon light made them glow.

  • The mussels formed a dense clump around this small tide pool. A single giant green anemone hung on the side of the pool. The mussels are favorite food of the ochr sea stars and therefore tend to be found higher in the intertidal zone than sea stars can go.

  • The small tide pool had a wonderful example of the giant green sea anemone. The anemone was 3 or 4 inches across and you can easily see its mouth in the middle of its circle of tentacles.

  • The sun set behind the sea stacks, silhouetting the trees on the cliffs. I used a slow shutter speed to soften and blur the waves.
