  • The pied-billed grebe came briefly to the surface in the early morning golden water. It dove shortly after this picture and disappeared under the water. The morning glow created a very tranquil setting to sit and see what moved through the water.

  • I liked how the colors and silhouete framed this scene. The clouds gave a warm feel to the overall landscape and reflected in the water. I waited until a pair of ducks crossed the picture to give a foreground interest.

  • The golden light reflecting off the water and light ripples were intriquing and created a peaceful atmosphere. I wanted to focus in on just the reflection in the water. The coot provided some additional interest and a place for the eye to rest as it purused the reflection.

  • The coots moved slowly out into the bright reflection forming a siloute body moving across the orange water. The sun had not quite come above the horizon, yet the entire landscape was golden.

  • The morning fog had formed ice crystals along the grain of the planks on the dock. I was fascinated by the design it formed and how the early morning light made the crystals glow. I looked for an appealing design.

  • Cloud Reflections-Green Lake-Seattle...jpg
  • Light ripples were coming across the water as I watched the reflections of the clouds and sky pass when I noticed a coot moving into the scene. Its silhouete created a nice ankor to the scene.

  • The female bufflehead surfaced from a dive. A few water droplets stayed on her back as she rested a few seconds before her next dive.

  • A female Bufflehead pauses on the surface between feeding dives.

  • The Bufflehead sat on the surface for a few seconds after she poped up from her last dive. I watched carefully as she prepared to dive and noticed that she spreads her tail as a large paddle and pusing hard down to propel her up and straight down on a dive.

  • Shovelor Pair-Green Lake-Seattle-024...jpg
  • Resting but keeping one eye open to watch for posible danger. This pair of shovelers was along the shore and seemed to ignore the walkers right above them on the paved trail unless one stopped right there. It must be a difficutl place to rest.

  • The pattern formed by the branches extending down into the water was fascinating and the female shoeveler sleeping on one foot added an interesting element to the picture.

  • Three mergansers work the shallow water just out from shore looking for fish.

  • The pair activily dove together searching for fish. I never saw one surface with a fish. Some dives lasted 15 or 20 seconds and they would resurface several dozen yards from where they dove. Notice the water droplets on the bill and feathers of the femail from her last dive.

  • Something startled the feeding flock causing them to raise their heads and excitedly whistle. I looked to see if an eagle or hawk was near by or whether it was a passing dog. I could not tell and the flock went back to feeding in a few seconds indicating they did not feel it was serious.

  • The mass moved one way and then another almost as if all the individuals were connected by a magical cord.

  • The flock was whistling loudly in the water beside the path when all of a sudden individuals began to jump up to cross the path toward the ball field where they began to graze intensely on the grass.

  • I spotted this Eurasian Widgen in the flock of American Widgens. It blended in quite well and I only saw it when I looked carefuly through the several hundred birds in the group.

  • This pair traveled close together as the other birds flowed back and forth around them. It made me wonder if they were already paired for the coming year and would travel north together when spring arrived.

  • The gull walked back and forth across the lawn almost as if it was a lawn mower although it didn't follow systemati lines. It was clearly searching for grubs and other food items in the grass. I never saw it catch anything in the time I watched.

  • The male bufflehead was feeding actively just off shore. It would dive for 15 or 20 seconds before surfacing for a few seconds. The male gradually moved along the edge of the tree reflections and the pattern was intriquing.

  • The red alders are forming catkins and buds are beginning to swell.

  • The seeds had already dropped from the alder's pod and they looked just like minuature pine cones.

  • The male Red-winged Blackbird was displaying and calling vigorously from a cattail perch. The displays were to keep other mailes out and attrack prospective mates.

  • Notice the lobbed toes of the Coot as it stands on the branch.
