Tracks of Boring Beetles in a lodgepole pine log

Fire had moved through this forest in the Pasayten Wilderness in 2003. Most of the dead pines had fallen and young lodgepole pines were more than 10 feet tall. Evidence that bark beetles invaded the fire killed trees is abundant. I found this intricate design formed by beetle larva in one of the down snags.
