  • Small spider web strands ran from needle to needle on the tips of a lodgepole pine. First-year cones have begun to develop near the terminal bud of this branch.

  • Fire had moved through this forest in the Pasayten Wilderness in 2003.  Most of the dead pines had fallen and young lodgepole pines were more than 10 feet tall.  Evidence that bark beetles invaded the fire killed trees is abundant.  I found this intricate design formed by beetle larva in one of the down snags.
