  • The cardinal cocked its head sideways.  I couldn't tell if it was worrying about something above or looking to the ground.  The heavy snow could make a sneak attack by a hawk easier.

  • Snow flacks settled briefly on the cardinals back.  She still had snow on her bill from you rooting in the snow below the bush for possible seeds.

  • The junco had its fleathers fluffed to give it more insolation fromt he cold and the snow rested on its back withou melting.  The bird didn't seem to mind the snow and peacefully sat for several minutes.

  • The cardinal was tense and alert as it paused on the exposed branch before flying off into the bushes.  The heavy snowing created a white background behind the bird.

  • The junco flew on to the branch and piered down toward the ground aparently looking for where next to go.  It sat for only a brief second before dropping down to the ground below the branch.

  • The old lilly stock provided a good perch above the ground in my garden.  The White-throated Sparrow was very alert to my movements and only stayed for a few seconds.

  • The white-throated sparrow flew up from feeding along the ground when it saw me coming.  It sat for a few minutes before flying off to other parts.

  • The dove was alert and wanted to fly to the feeder but wasn't sure if I was a problem.  The snow settled onto its head and back as we both stared at each other.

  • The song sparrow looked directly at me and appeared to wonder what I was and why was I there.  Its long toes and claws easily wrap around the twig.

  • The blue jay was not happy that I was around.  It glared at me over its shoulder in hopes that I would go back into the house so it could fly to the feeder.  It had been snowing for more than a day and the birds were hungry for easy pickings.

  • Snow had built up on the branches except where they were protected from above.  This provided some protection for this white-throated sparrow and it sat for a while.

  • The snow was coming down heavily and the birds were actively looking for food.  This sparrow landed on the branch knocking snow from it and waited to drop down into the feeding flock.

  • The forest was a wonderful misture of Western Larch and Englemann's Spruce witha  few firs thrown in.  The understory included blueberries, mountain ash and a number of wildflowers.  The trail climbed through the forest with plenty of places to gaze out on the magnificient wildness in the Wenaha-Tuccanon Wilderness Area.

  • The Yellow Violets were blooming along the trail into Boulder Creek Wilderness.  In several places they carpeted the ground.

  • The trillium flower waved slowly in the light breeze.  Something had taken a few bits out of the pedals in a few places.  Notice how distinctive the veins are in the pedals.

  • Resting but keeping one eye open to watch for posible danger.  This pair of shovelers was along the shore and seemed to ignore the walkers right above them on the paved trail unless one stopped right there.  It must be a difficutl place to rest.

  • The golden light reflecting off the water and light ripples were intriquing and created a peaceful atmosphere.  I wanted to focus in on just the reflection in the water.  The coot provided some additional interest and a place for the eye to rest as it purused the reflection.

  • Fall along Icicle Creek outside of Levenworth, WA.  The sound of the water rushing over the rocks created a tranquil atmosphere.  I crawled out onto a rock in the stream to be able to take in the ambiance of the place and was reward by seeing an American Dipper searching for food in the rapids.

  • The view down Bagley Creek is inviting for a long walk, enjoying the cool and calm feeling of early fall.  Fall flowers intersperse with red leaves of huckleberries as one wonders down to lower Bagley Lake.  This is a place to escape the rapidness of urban life.

  • Bald Eagles began to converge along one section of the beach in Boundary Bay.  A small group settled together and additional ones were spaced out from this central group.  I wonder what brought this magnificent assemblage of eagles together in one place?

  • The Red-footed Boobies sat in the bushes as the sun set behind Genovesa Island.  This beautiful scene made us pause and marvel at our good fortune to visit this unique place.

  • The bushtit flitted on the branch, hung upside down to search the underside of the branch.  It quickly moved along the branch, never staying in one place for more than a second or two.

  • The Yellow-billed Stork feeds by opening its bill and placing it into the water. It then moves the bill laterally., snapping shut when it touches a prospective prey item.
