  • The subalpine forest extended down through the wilderness valley for as far as the eye could see. I found the wildness breath taking. This looks across the Wenaha-Tucannon Wilderness into Oregon. We had been having rain miixed with snow during tbe last two days so it was really relaxing to finally have the rain stop.

  • Indian Creek drains the eastern side of glacier peak wilderness. A large foot log forms a bridge across the creek. I sat to watch to water flow unde the log. A dipper flew by several times, complaining loudly that I was on the bridge and disturbing its creek domain. The tumbling of water across the rocks created a wonderful mesmerizing sound. After a while, I figured I should let the Dipper have its creek back so I moved along.

  • The forest was a wonderful misture of Western Larch and Englemann's Spruce witha few firs thrown in. The understory included blueberries, mountain ash and a number of wildflowers. The trail climbed through the forest with plenty of places to gaze out on the magnificient wildness in the Wenaha-Tuccanon Wilderness Area.

  • Morning mist clung to Deer Lake and reflected the early morning light from the clouds. A light breeze across the lake made it quite cold as I stood and watched the morning wake up. I was bundled as if it was winter. A pacific wren sang its complex song behind me and the mosquitoes buzzed loadly around my face. A beuatiful wilderness morning.

  • The lower part of Ridley Creek hung close to the southern slope of the valley so little sun hit this area. Boulders of various sizes covered the stream and the water cascaded through a series of gaps and drops. An American dipper flew through the area scolding loudly that I was present.

  • Fire had moved through this forest in the Pasayten Wilderness in 2003. Most of the dead pines had fallen and young lodgepole pines were more than 10 feet tall. Evidence that bark beetles invaded the fire killed trees is abundant. I found this intricate design formed by beetle larva in one of the down snags.
