  • Three Surf Scotters move in close to shore before beginning to feed. The femail leads the group with two males along side. The bill and head pattern on the males is quite distinctive for this species.

  • This large log was sitting solid in the surf and the waves were not strong enough to move it. The next big storm may take this back to sea or push it higher on the beach. What does it look like to you? A large butterfly?

  • A mixed group of scoters and goldeneyes rest between feeding dives. Note the young glaucous-winged gull with them. If a duck surfaced with a mussel, the gull would attempt to steal it from them. The duck would immediately dive to protect its morsel.

  • The logs were piled like thrown linclon logs. The storm surges must have been impressive to push these logs up on the beach and stack them on top of each other. Can you imagine what it might have looked like?

  • The intricate design formed by the wood grain and cracks was fascinating to study. I studied the design trying to decide if it looked like something in particular.

  • The sun set behind the sea stacks, silhouetting the trees on the cliffs. I used a slow shutter speed to soften and blur the waves.

  • A few ochr sea stars clung to rocks at low tide as the waves came in and out. I used a slow shutter speed to create a ghostly feeling to the scene.
